What is Hemp?

Hemp is one of the oldest agricultural crops on the planet. Due to its easy cultivation, growing and its massive yields, it has served humankind in more ways than imaginable. From paper to textiles, cord to medicine and a nutrient-rich food source, hemp is thought to have had as many as 25,000 diverse uses in its history beside humans.

After World War 1, however, hemp was heavily regulated and prohibited for its THC content. This meant growing, producing and utilizing this sustainable natural resource was off the cards.

It wasn’t until late last year, when the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp with less than 0.3% THC in it (all other plants with more than this amount would be defined as cannabis or marijuana) an agricultural commodity, which made it almost as accessible as your average garden tomato – though with a few more growing, manufacturing and selling regulations.

  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine

  • Methionine
  • Phenylalanine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Valine

The other 11 are nonessential amino acids, meaning the body makes these itself, and so is not necessarily integral to include in your diet. There is one more group of amino acids known as conditional. This group is made up of amino acids which are needed during times of stress or illness. They are made up mostly of non-essential amino acids.

Because hemp seeds contain all essential and non-essential amino acids, it is known as a complete protein. This provides your body with all the protein it needs for optimal nutrition.

How to Include Hemp Protein Powder in your Diet

Baking with hemp protein powder is as simple as adding it to your favorite protein-packed recipe in place of other proteins. Below is an easy baking with hemp protein powder recipe that will not only fill you up, but provide quality nutrition to get you through the day. It is vegan-friendly, with no refined carbohydrates or sugars.

Healthy Walnut, Oat & Hemp Banana Bread

What you’ll need:

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Sifter
  • Spatula
  • Loaf pan
  • Foil

Ingredients:

  • 4 super ripe bananas
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 cup light spelt flour
  • ⅓ cup Endoca Hemp Protein Powder
  • ¼ cup Maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ½ cup melted coconut oil
  • ¼ cup crushed walnuts
  • ¼ cup unhulled hemp seeds
  • ½ cup berries of your choice (optional)
  • A handful of coconut chips

Method:

  • Preheat oven to 350F or 175C
  • In a large bowl, peel and mash bananas until basically smooth (or as lumpy as you like for chunky banana bites).
  • Whisk in coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla until combined (you may need to heat coconut oil if it is hard, before whisking).
  • Next, using a sifter, sift in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Using a spatula, mix the wet and dry ingredients together until well combined.
  • Fold in the hemp seeds, berries, and crushed walnuts until evenly distributed and set batter aside.
  • Grease your loaf pan with coconut oil, and slowly pour in the batter. Smooth out the top with a spatula and add additional hemp seeds and coconut chips.
  • Cover the mixture with foil and take foil cover off after 45 minutes.
  • Bake an extra 15 – 25 min or until coconut chips turn golden.
  • Using a toothpick or spaghetti stick, check the cake. It is ready when the stick comes out of the center clean.
